Eve

Eve
"Hanging's too good for her," they said
As she was dragged out screaming
Made to stand in front of the crowd.
Jeering, they threw stones
To break her arrogant spirit.
"'Twas not me!" she hollered
Striving to be heard above the insults
Her stubborn pride stood strong.
"'Twas them, the enemies of women.
They forced themselves on me
With threats of violence
And offers of payment."
But the onlookers knew different.
They knew her evil ways
The cunning web of lies she wove
To trap the beguiled victims.
Like the grim reaper, she wrecked lives
Uncaring as to the consequences
Ignoring her conscience.
"I wrestle with daily with the spell
Under which I live."
Cries of "Witch!" and "Whore!"
Were the last words she heard
As her world went up in flames.
And as the embers died
There was nothing to be seen
And they knew that she was pure.
