Train stations are the loneliest places,
full of parting lovers and barked goodbyes, yelled above the engine
noise.
A single cough, from my swollen mouth, reverberates
around around around.
And on the painted steel steps
my climbing footfalls chime, like church bells tolling
my languishing splutter's offspring, extolling
a morose kind of clanging; chang chang chang.
Perhaps the shades of all these wounded,
resonating refrains will harp around forever,
on the tracks of trains,
a thin, grim hymn repeating,
and perhaps the groans of all those parting
lovers, from throughout the years still stand here, on the tracks in
choirs
with my own murmuring echoes joining them, singing,
'Don't go, don't go, don't go.'
