Fourteen Together

Two girls in a tree together.
Fourteen.
Young enough to climb trees and not care who might see,
But old enough to have serious discussions at the top.
An instinct for each other,
Only possible in the half-way house of fourteen.
A foothill, above the misty vales of childhood,
Yet still below the austere grown up peaks.
Talking, planning, imagining their futures.
What to become?
Everything seems possible within the bubble they inhabit.
But always together, at fourteen.
