The Horizon

Lilly lay languidly on the beach watching the deep blue sea and the
waves lapping lazily against the shore. The sound of the ocean and the
warm midday sun shining upon her face caused her eyelids to droop. She
drifted slowly into sleep&;#8230;
In her dream, Lilly had spent a very enjoyable afternoon with a friend.
On her departure, her friend kissed her, and presented her with a blue
goldfish.
Strolling meditatively along the footpath, Lilly failed to see the
puddle until it was too late.
Squelching along the street, Lilly was surprised to notice that it had
begun to drizzle. Only moments before, there was not a cloud to be seen
in the blue sky.
Gradually this drizzle began to get heavier. Lilly could just
distinguish her house through the rain, and she began to proceed
faster. But no matter how quick she was, it made no difference - the
faster she ran, the further away her house seemed to drift.
As Lilly was waiting to cross the street, a ferry rounded the corner.
This ferry approached quickly, and sailed past leaving a very wet Lilly
in its wake.
Lilly, soaking wet from head to toe, finally reached her house. In the
bathroom she turned on the hot tap and let the water fill the
bath.
But the water remained cold.
Then Lilly realised she had to go to the toilet.
As she was washing her hands, she realised that the cold bathwater was
beginning to overflow onto the floor. In no time at all, it had filled
the bathroom and was spreading out into the hall, and dripping through
the ceiling to the kitchen beneath.
Lilly could not reach the tap; she was powerless to stop the
flow.
Dashing downstairs, Lilly wrenched open the front door. All the other
fish were oblivious to this strange new world; they were floating about
their daily business.
A sudden surge of water engulfed Lilly. It filled her mouth and her
nose and her lungs. Images began to drift in front of her eyes - until
all was black. She could no longer see, no longer hear, no longer
breathe.
But she could taste the salt.
