Horseman

Lock your doors, shutter your windows.
Keep all your lanterns ablaze
And your rifles well-loaded:
The Horseman rides tonight.
Take heed of all noise and light,
Of shifting darkness, of anything
Casting shadows upon your floor:
The Horseman rides tonight.
Be wary of sneaking shadows
Lingering by your door.
Hide yourselves, cast no suspicion:
The Horseman rides tonight.
A black ghost gallops, rapier drawn
Flashing its blade in the silver
Moonlight, piercing hearts with ice:
The Horseman is riding tonight.
Leave us be, creature of darkness,
Messenger of evil, guardian of Styx!
Leave our trembling hearts at peace:
The Horseman is riding tonight.
Comfort is the dawn, rising
Bright and cold and clear,
Bringing the sun's sweet salvation:
The Horseman rode last night.
But his hooves never once
Touched the ground, nor
Did crunch of gravel resound, yet
The Horseman rode last night.
But the clattering rang upon our
Minds, the sharp steel shoes
Impressed tracks upon our hearts:
The Horseman rode last night.
