"I don't think you should go in to work today," I said, frowning in
concern at my husband. "You look really ill."
"I'm fine. Really." Richard assured me.
I wasn't convinced. Richard had been looking increasingly run down for
a while now, and today he looked like death warmed up. His work had
been taxing him to hard.
"Why don't you take a day off today, and go in tomorrow?" I suugested.
"It can't hurt to take just one day off."
"Honey, you know I've got that board meeting with the chief executives
this morning. If I don't go in, they could fire me."
I sighed. "Ok then. You'd better go, you'll miss your flight."
He gave me a quick peck on the cheek, then turned to Millie, our
three-year-old daughter.
"See you tonight Millicent."
"Daddy!" she screwed up her heart-shaped face in contempt.
"I know, I know, you hate that name. See you later Millie-Bee."
Millie's face lit up in a big, bright smile and she gave her daddy a
sloppy, wet kiss on the cheek.
"Why can't daddy stay home? Millie don't want daddy to go to work,
something bad will happen."
"What's that, Bee?"
"Big crash."
"Big crash?"
"Yeah."
"She had a bad dream last night," I told Richard. "She was crying and
shaking."
"Why didn't you wake me up?" Rich asked.
"Because you were dead to the world and looked absolutely exhausted.
Now get out of here and earn your keep!" I teased.
"Ok, ok," he gave me another kiss, this time on the lips. "See you
tonight." he winked. "Bye Millie-Bee!"
"Bye Dad!"
Rich grabbed his coat and briefcase, gave us a cheery wave, then
left.

I came back from taking Millie to play group, and collapsed into the
sofa. Picking up the remote control, I switched on the TV and changed
the channel from the children's program Millie had been watching
earlier.
I was just in time to see an airplane crash into the second Twin
Tower. I screamed and clutched my face in horror, as I experienced a
strange, gut-wrenching sadness in my stomuch. Suddenly, my cell phone
bleeped.
I had a text message. Shocked, I opened my bag, took out my phone and
read the message. It was from Richard:
