Learning to be human
- It was a morning like any other. After breakfast I turned on the T.V.
while seeping from a hot cup of coffee. As I was watching the morning
news I had a strange feeling of deja-vu:the same things repeating over
and over again:``Today six people were killed in an attack...;``The
polution reached its highest level this year...;The world economy is
free falling...; Unfortunately our country doesn`t have a real chance
at the december UE summit. The entire news program was nothing but a
long list of complains and ,at the same time,a desperate lack of
will. So, I demanded myself:Are we so weak? Right after that short
reflexion I saw the image of a child from Africa who was suffering from
malnutriton .It seemed to me that humanity has reached one of its
lowest points:we have trashed innocence. That sad look and the emptyness
of those eyes ,that I will not forget soon, made me hate myself for the
breakfast that I just had and for the glass of water lying in front of
me.Do not get me wrong , my street(way in life) is not a Rodeo Drive
but starting with that moment I have lost the right to complain and I
learnt to appreciate the roof over my head. The big question that
persisted in my mind was so simple and so profound:When have we lost
touch with everything that humanity used to represent? When have we
closed our eyes? The day went on ireversible and I went to meet some
friends. In front of the opera house a homeless approached me.While he
was asking for money he grabbed my hand and my very first reaction was
repulsion.I hated myself the next moment for my attitude and I hated
again the superficiality that leads our every day life. So the message
of this mixed-up text is a symbol that should get born in each of us in
this very moment-The contemporan people have to develop a will that
will make us able to change things and situations not only in our
neighborhood but in our world. I hope from all my heart that we are
strong enough to learn how to be human again. Yours sincerely, the
messanger from the east.
