The Night Confided

The Night confided in me tonight
And told me that he misses you;
He told me nothing at all is right
Unless the moon is kissing you.
So I get to thinking–
What’s so special
About the moon?
Why not the stars–
I know you dig
The hunter– or the sky
That must feel as soft
As a blanket?
The night doesn’t know what
He’s talking about.
But at least he knows enough
To miss you– that gives him one up
On the Day, which only
“Can’t wait to see you again, beautiful.”
And me? I’d love to take you away
Somewhen between night and day
On the breeze of a palm tree’s sway
In the mists of the ocean’s spray
Through the light of a you-lit bay–
Which is really to say
I love you.
The Night confided in me tonight
And told me that he misses you;
He told me nothing at all is right
Unless the moon is kissing you.
Pick me, pick me,
I’ll whisper as I lay
In dreams of you,
Until the words float me up
And my lips cover the moon.
