Our Lives Would Be Void
If I told you all the things you wanted to hear,
My prose would be wasteful, long-winded, redundant.
If I told you all the things you needed to hear,
My speech would be spare, concise, to the point.
Your desire for flattery and flannel,
In no small part as much my fault as yours,
Denigrates the qualities that are unique to you:
Beauty, grace, style - clich?s easily yours.
No designers and their over-priced assistance required;
Wit, wisdom and intelligence -born in not trained up.
No lectures, no books, no late night OU necessary.
Your one disadvantage, that I won't encourage,
Is your need to be reminded of those things
That are so painfully obvious to me,
And to them,
Displayed in every possible way -
Without you even knowing.
So I won't tell you what you want to hear,
The superfluous, extravagant, ramblings you cry out for.
Just take what you need -
Knowledge that our lives would be void
Without your presence in them.
