Muted skies and eyes the lights hit red for
twelve seconds. She wais, begs and peers into
the taxi. A window is all that's between us,
but really there's much more than that. Her
gecko eyes, flush with waves of silence, lap
up on a beach in limbo. Woven into her shirt
is her school number; a road with no markings:
3 0 7 5 2 3. In the Land of Smiles her world
depends upon it. Above her, outside the spirit
house, the moon sleeps on the job, whilst Lord
Ganesha walks around in circles, looking for
his broken tusk. Right now, it's 2 a.m. and at
8 a.m. her number will be called, where she'll
then be asked to sing the National Anthem. Thus,
simply put, Do you think she'll she make it?
