The First Reading
'Have you been in a relationship in the past? I sense a child that's
gone to spirit. He would be about eleven now. He wants you to know that
he's very close to you.'
He shifted uneasily in his chair. What on earth was he doing here?
These people were pop psychologists at best, dangerous charlatans at
worse. Still, he was here, so the least he could do was keep an open
mind. His first reading lasted for half an hour. It continued much as
he had anticipated - cod philosophy and generalities that would apply
to half the population, if not more. But occasionally, once every five
minutes or so, he thought she said something that was unique to
him.
After he left, he analysed those thoughts away. 'Everyone must think
that. That's how they get their repeat business and recommendations.'
He looked around for Adam's reassuring presence. 'Adam?'
'Here Dad.'
'So what did you think?'
'Rubbish. It's all a load of mumbo jumbo anyway. Communicating with the
spirits...' Adam shook his head.
'Sometimes I feel like I'm the grown-up here.'
He smiled at the exasperated look on his son's face.
'And anyway,' Adam continued, 'I'm thirteen not eleven.'
