I didn't know what you bought me for my birthday,
You kept it a secret right til Wednesday
No hints, no first letters, no guessing games.
So I had to wait til 8:40 in the morning.
It came in a shiny silver envelope, and I tried to guess what was
inside -
Concert tickets? Gift vouchers?
But, I opened it carefully and stared for a little while
Trying to figure out what I held in my soft hands.
When I am 80 and married with kids and grand kids and maybe great grand
kids,
I'll hobble over to my garden bench while my husband is carving the
meat indoors,
And look up into the cold and clear night.
And I'll remember holding a piece of the universe in my hands
And remember when I was young and so loved.
And as I die, because I will be old and tired
I will know that in the sky
Is an immortal piece of love
And I shall live forever.
