Summer

On a day when everything shone we took a train down to the
coast
Holding clammy hands cooled by the breeze of a metal topped
window
After many stops and two separations and the coast's industrial
past
We saw the large gas head which flagged our goal was reached at
last
We stepped out onto dust dry pavements with papered ice cream
drips
Then stumbled with the other folk towards a place to sit
Down the sparkling river past the stern faced swans
Towards the sand peppered with shingle - to our spot
A large wooden castle topped with a union flag
A place to live out your crazy golf dreams
Speedboats shouted at through the lifeguard's megaphone
Epilogue of a golden riverside drink as local kids jumped from the
adjacent bridge
Siberian winds sweep round my neck from through the bus shelter
These days I seem to never see the light
But spend time like this nursing my soul
Thinking romantic thoughts of a place where I can't live
