Durham-Lass
A Durham lass, once stole my heart
With springtime joy's one May.
A Summer spent in lust, in love
Just memories today.
We'd share secret moonlit kisses,
Meet in smoky college bars
The night - we talked for hours &; hours
Then slept beneath the stars.
How I craved for her sweet touches,
Her lips to be on mine,
Oh her! My desire, my love, oh! Lust
For she my soul did pine!
Alas! She had to go back to that
Heroic northern town,
We swore we'd stay together -
Love would last, we were so proud
To meet at Durham station,
In the pouring summer rain
The longing of that first caress
The melting of the pain.
So we laughed and danced together,
By the babbling River Wear,
Cathedral tower watched over us,
So far and yet so near.
But, love can't last forever,
It will wilt and ebb away,
Like rotting flowers in a vase,
The penance of decay.
She left me for another,
My heart she broke, you see
And now to die a lonely soul,
Bereft and choked I'll be.
So I took the Whiskey bottle,
It would never let me down,
In pain, in life
Forevermore, your sorrow
It will drown.
