A letter to Mother

Hi Mom!,
Guess what, I am finally getting married. After I completed thirty
last year I had given up on marriage. I suppose you know that. But
then, Melissa happened to me. Believe me people like Melissa happen to
others. There I was on one plain winter morning poring over a couple of
balance sheets. Suddenly this BEAUTIFUL girl walked in and asked for
the MD's cubicle. I gave her the directions and what do I know. From
the next day, Melissa was working from the table next to mine.
Before I forget, how's everyone in Madras? I mean your husband and your
children. I hope you are cooking good food for them and keeping the
house well. You made great food when you were married to Dad. That
reminds me, Melissa and I have bought a nice apartment by the Ganges.
Its big enough for us and comes with furniture. And our employers are
providing us with a handyman who will look after the house when we are
busy at work. You will be amused mom, this servant's name is Joe. I
know, I know your husband's name is Joe too. And before you jump to any
conclusions let me tell you Joe was handpicked by our employers.
To get back to my bride. As I have already told you her seat was next
to mine at office. We got talking the first day itself during a coffee
break. Actually it was my break not Melissa's. Infact she had not been
given any work till then and I invited her to have coffee with me. She
smiled and refused. But after a while she joined me and we got talking.
She had just acquired an MBA degree and seemed both optimistic and
enthusiastic. Both her parents were reputed doctors and she appeared to
be very strong willed at least to me. You know mom I like independent,
outspoken people only if they are not my mom.
The more I got to know Mel (that's what I call her) the more I was
impressed. I found out that her parents were always fighting ego
battles over trivialities. She was fed up of being known as Mr
so-and-so's daughter. This was the reason she chose not to study
medicine and opted for elegant English literature. She always says that
her years in college were the best part of her life. She knows
everything about me mom. She knows you divorced Dad because you loved
another man. And after divorce you left Calcutta to be Mr Joe's wife.
Mel is marrying me against her parent' wishes. Wish me happiness ma.
Remember I have allowed you to be happy at my own cost.
Your Son Andrew.
