They all lived and worked in the town of Dune in eastern India. They
were all highly qualified people. There were doctors, engineers,
lawyers, actors, artists and writers among them. They met once and week
and discussed life in general and their work in particular. Each person
who attended the meeting had a brilliant academic record. He or she was
also quite successful in his or her sphere of work. Indeed, they were
proud people who were very conscious of the contribution they were
making to society. In their collective opinion this contribution was
tremendous and they expected to be recognized in some way. Members
wrote to the local government giving details of their work. They waxed
eloquent about their great talent and capability and how they had
enriched life in Dune. 'The Talents', as they called themselves
received no reply from the mayor whom they privately called senile and
foolish. It was decided that a 'Core Group' would be formed that would
address all the injustice done towards the genius of 'The Talents'.
Next Sunday, a very important meeting was convened. In this meeting the
so-called Core Group was constituted. There were four members in this
group. Neil was a doctor, Barry a lawyer, John was a sculptor while Art
was an engineer. These four were incidentally founder-members of 'The
Talents'. It was Art who suggested what action should be taken. He was
known to be impulsive and choleric. It was decided that they would
visit the Town Library the coming Sunday. Now, the Town Library is
rather old. It has a lot of valuable books which are coveted by the
people of the town. Sunday is the day when a lot of readers visit the
Library and read at leisure. At about six in the evening the Core Group
entered the library. They began asking the people present questions
related to various subjects. When the hapless readers could not answer
the questions the Core Group called them fools. Then, before anyone
could react the group took out revolvers and shot every single person
present. They all died instantly. The people of the town were shocked
to read about the murders in the papers the next day. The police had no
clue about the identity of the murderers because they left no
witnesses. The next Sunday the Core Group visited a musical concert. As
before the group met the musicians before the concert and asked them
pointed questions about music. When the musicians couldn't answer the
questions the Core Group took out revolvers and shot them. The town was
too shocked to react. The Core Group then visited a hospital and asked
questions about trauma medicine. When these questions could not be
answered well, every single person was shot. But before the group could
escape Art was captured. Despite being subjected to a tough
interrogation process Art did not reveal a thing. However the police
began looking up his friends. Little by little, one by one the Core
Group was nabbed. In fact 'The Talents' were all exposed for what they
were. While being questioned by the law, the Core Group showed no
remorse for their wrongdoing. All of them without exception told the
police that they were very valuable to society. That without them life
in Dune would come to a standstill. They also emphasized that they had
neither regret nor remorse for what they had done.
