Short cut

The rain was really lashing down now, what little moonlight was
getting through the clouds was mostly shut out by the trees, giving an
eerie presence to the sides of the road ,not far to go now I'll soon be
back on the wide open motorway I thought gladly. my heart sank as I
realised that the road ahead was blocked,as I tried to turn the car
around, the back wheel went off the side of the narrow road and before I
knew it I was stuck in the mud.Taking the short cut didn't seem so
clever anymore.Alone in the middle of nowhere in the dead of night, what
should I do?the thought of getting out of the car was not appealing, but
then neither was sitting there waiting, it felt as something was
watching me.I kept Looking one way then the other half expecting to see
something, somewhere in the darkness. It was too much.I got out and
started walking.Sticking to the middle of the road, my heart beating
faster by the second. The wind swirled through the trees, almost
bringing them to life and...wait were those footsteps I could hear
behind me?should I stop?should I look?,it's just the rain,isn't it?
just keep walking, just keep moving. My pace quickened.panic set in as I
realised the tree blocking the road, the reason I was in this mess, was
no longer there,I started to run, what the hell was going on,something
was definately following me,but I daren't look back, then to my eternal
relief I saw that just ahead was a house, very old and run down, but
someone was in I'd seen them in the upstairs window ,and thats all that
mattered. As I banged on the door furiously, it opened wide and I fell
inside and slammed it shut quickly and sighing with relief, locked it.I
looked around the candlelit hall, there was no-one around, then there a
was creak,I looked up to the top of the stairs, there stood a woman ,in
the flickering candlelight she was barely visible,in fact I could only
see the lower part of her dress and her hands. 'hello, I er, had a
problem with my car and ..' she pointed to the phone before I'd
finished, I could hear her coming down the stairs and walk towards me,
I dialed the number and turned to look at her,the receiver fell out of
my hand as I screamed in horror, her eyes!,suddenly everything had
dissapeared,no candles!,no phone!,no house! I was in the thick of the
dark forest , terrified and confused , whichever way I turned she was
there, hovering, laughing menacingly, almost as if taking pleasure in my
fear,I started to run, as fast as my trembling legs could go,back to
the road, and then on out of the forest, her merciless laughter ringing
in my ears,at last the motorway was in sight, but she was still
following me, she'd rush past me and disappear, only to re-appear from
out of the darkness suddenly, scaring the life out of me,but I kept
running out of sheer desperation, into the path of an oncoming car,it
screeched to halt inches from me,the furious driver shouting and
swearing, looked on in disbelief as I opened the door and got into the
passenger seat 'drive, drive, for gods sake just go! please!please!'I
screamed 'alright,ok,keep your hair on,whats wrong, whats happened? you
look like you've seen a ghost' 'I have'
