I painted Emily in oil on canvas
in gentle tints of blues and gold,
closed her eyes and smoothed her brow-line
and let her dream the dreams of old.
I brushed her hair with streams of silver
and watched it flow upon a breeze.
I blushed a smile on lips so tender
and felt her breathe the breath of seas.
I painted Emily in flowers of springtime
reclining, bathing in warm sun
and heard her singing sentimental -
no longer sad, when I was done.
