In plain sight

In all strains of life, scum rises to the top.
From baths and basins to teacups and pints,
scum can be identified and managed
to preserve the integrity of that life form.
However, if left undisturbed or poorly managed,
scum begins to permeate the fabric of the mass,
slowly spoiling its integrity.
Left to neglect over time that life form
unnaturally transmutes into another living thing, unrecognisable from its primal state.
Only the scum thrives in survival,
having given birth to those new life forms
that were grown from the properties
of the previously untainted mass.
As that mass becomes only a small part
of the newly grown living matter,
it is wholly reliant on the life of the scum
for its own survival.
