Sacred Clown

I am a clown,
A comic with a smile.
I make others laugh,
Forget their troubles
For a while.
Everybody likes to laugh.
I'm the fool,
The joker in the pack.
A wild happy card
Shuffled/hidden
In the stack.
People love it
When I paint the town.
With silly colours,
That mock the frown.
Everybody likes to laugh.
Though deep down..
I'm a weeping clown-
Happy and sad
At the same time.
My tears are hiding behind a smile,
My humour is artistic guile -
Of all that rips into my soul,
Breaks me up, digs a hole.
Hard to understand, I know.
Part of my sacred path though-
It's a mystic show:
I mock the general apathy.
The "I don't care"
Of humanity.
I shatter pretence
With it's own laughter.
Break the masks
Like alabaster.
Impose on people
A moral demand.
As I hold the mirror
In my mocking hand.
Till through laughter
They recognise,
That the things they tell
Themselves are lies.
And if you ever
Get close enough,
You'll see.
That I'm not what I appear to be.
Hiding underneath all that make-up:
Is the real me.
With eyes that are salty,
&;
Deep like the sea.
