Pretty Little Thing

Everyone thought he took the girl
because he couldn't see a thing
beyond the gilded frame
of her honey-blonde hair--
but that wasn't it, not really.
Royals believed she was a prize to him,
a trophy, coveted and stolen away
from another great man
out of a sense of entitlement--
the kind of thing you'd expect
from a prince of Troy.
Love is often born fully grown,
ready to cross the street
without holding your hand
or asking your permission.
Paris learned this very thing
standing in an archway,
when his heart grew wild
and ran away with reason.
What he heard was music
as the child goddess cried.
In his last moments, he could see
that love and destruction were Siamese twins,
always together
dreaming
of a life apart.
