Freedom, Davin knew that it was nothing more than a tool to the Urgis. They were rats in a maze, hamsters running nowhere on someone else’s wheel, until the Urgis got what they wanted, the oak, then what, elimination. Their purpose fulfilled. There would be no reason to tolerate their existence. If only it was a tree and nothing more…
Trapped on the Urgis’s ship, he was beginning to understand his captors, all too well. They wanted, security. Their fear would not allow them to settle for less. Control gained through knowledge was the only thing that would guarantee them a safe future. Others were always a threat. They were convinced the oak would give them access to these others, wherever they might be.
The oak was, for lack of a better word, a natural, crease in time and space the only thing worth wanting. Access to every possibility, every other people, every other threat, every other galaxy. They were determined to conquer or destroy the universe out of sheer terror of what might be lurking in the dark. The Urgis were nothing more than selfish overpowered paranoid fools.
And they were present inside them, an ability acquired, through decades of study. Silent but filling his mind with their desires, words unspoken, but their meaning still clanging in his heart, with deafening clarity. They were desperate to find the oak. But it was lost in time, invisible, unreachable.
He, Pry, Tucker and Silhouette wanted to find the oak, as well. It was, after all, in Trudy’s back yard. And their heart lay beating in her house.
He had stared deep into its’ branches and saw the stars. It had for a moment transported him. Something bright and perfect lay beyond those stars. First light? The eternal dawn, from which everything sprang. How did he know this? Was someone reaching out to him. Sava maybe….?
.’..they know my thoughts…they know we can’t find the oak…. can’t and should never find the oak….’
“Davin,” Pry mewed as they walked toward Tucker’s room. “Your eyes are so sad.”
The hallway was bland. His company sweet. “We can never go back.”
Now her eyes were sad. “I know. We cannot expose them. But we cannot endanger Earth’s survivors. How can they expect us to breach time and find the oak?”
He stopped and clasped her hand. “You sense them too?”
“Yes, they are within.”
“This is not freedom.” He glared up at the ceiling, which was like looking up at the sky. “We take them everywhere we go.”
“How are we to find the oak, anyway?” There was a hint of belligerence in her voice.
“We, don’t.”
“And they simply leave us alone on Earth to rebuild in peace.”
He smiled down at her, shaking his head. “Their patient.”
“And they know us.” Pry’s features darkened. “They do not feel love, only fear. They cannot be lonely, only threatened. They will wait for our hearts to break.” She looked away. Mine is breaking now. I miss Nikki.”
“Yeah, they know all about her, and Beth and Trudy, and the fairies. We are all connected, in ways they can’t imagine, or ever hope to experience, that’s what they are counting on. That connection, they are counting on that to breach the unseen.”
