Mr Songman

I remember when I was a kid
Old Benny and his beat-up guitar
He'd sit on a bench in the park
And the children would come from afar
He'd play us old Beatles songs
And the ones that he knew from the past
But the only song I wanted to hear
Were the ones Benny saved until last
The stories of a man and his life
And the trials that he went through
And I knew from the look in his eyes
Every word Benny sang was true
He sang of his life on the sea
And the lands to which he sailed
How he and the crew got so drunk
And they stayed in some foreign jail
He sang of the woman he loved
In the days of another life
He remembers the joy that he felt
When she told him she'd be his wife
The stories of a man and his life
And the trials that he went through
And I knew from the look in his eyes
Every word Benny sang was true
Old Benny died four years ago
But his songs live on in my heart
And sometimes when I close my eyes
I can still hear him playing his guitar
Hey Mr Songman
I still think of you
And when you sang your songs
The skies they were so blue
