About a Girl

We were so close,
You and I,
That summer we had together,
Time seemed to fly by,
So close to each other,
There was no question of stray,
We didn't look to the future,
We knew it would come to that day.
So that day it came,
And with it I left,
The world isn't free,
To those against theft,
All of the while,
I thought of you still,
Trying to keep us together,
By just the power of my will.
But you're no good at staying,
When your lover isn't near,
I knew that from the start,
It was never unclear,
Except in my mind,
Where I hid from the truth,
Sometimes we fool ourselves,
To hold on to our youth.
So I'll see you again,
And I hope that you'll see,
Despite my bashful ways,
There's been no other to me,
We can talk and make fun,
For the whole world to see,
But they could never know,
What you meant to me.
Even that night,
When you were tied to another,
I still held a candle,
Impossible to smother,
But you tried your best,
And jumped ship once more,
Still tied to that other,
But caring for more.
So from now on its over,
We can touch, and we can smile,
No matter for my feelings,
I will pretend all the while,
That I am a free bird,
Not held by solid nor air,
A confident face,
Hiding the wings you impaired.
It's been a while since I've seen you,
And I think now it's done,
I have no more love,
For that earliest one,
For the girl who stole me,
With just a smile in a day,
The same girl who broke me,
In a similar way.
So that smile still chases me,
And it hurts me to know,
That all of these words,
Are but a show,
For I could never put down,
Just how deeply I feel,
And I know if she returns,
That her smile will break the seal.
For my heart is always hers,
It has been since we met,
I waited, then I won,
Until I lost to regrets,
And who knows if ever,
She will grace me again,
I will love her forever,
Till the sun does not ascend.
