If the world was a fingertip,
And if sorrow was a flame
Flickering in humanity's inter-dependence,
Biting into everybody's need for acceptance,
Then surely, so continuously callused would be this skin
That we would be numb to the pain?
And if love was a storm,
And the heart, a window
Abused and afraid of the wind and the rain,
Masking-taped and buckling underneath the strain
Then surely, so continuously shuttered would be this window
That it could never be opened again?
But we are the world,
Sorrow is sorrow,
Love is what is in our hearts,
And the window is but our eyes.
We are human;
We dance the flames of sorrow time and time again,
We let the wind and water drench us in our sleep,
Because we never lose sight of hope almost too far away
That if we hurt so many times, we might find someone we can keep.
