The Begining of US

My husband and I grew up in the same neighborhood, attended the same
parish school, city high school and college. We met officially at
Temple University by recognizing each other. He bounded up to me one
day and asked me, "Don't I know you from somewhere?" The funny thing
was that I did. He figured out my schedule and would appear before or
after my classes. I wondered if he attended any. I thought his major
was "movies" at SAC (student activity center). To be fair I have to
admit that I was an easy target. I was still recovering from
mononucleosis and often slept in the library. I either studied or
watched the guys walking throught the courtyard. I got all A's that
semester.
I told my mom that this guy was following me on campus. I bumped into
him everywhere. She was very concerned and did her research. She asked
her "lady friends" and found out that he was a local boy. His mom was
also a member of the mother's club. As an aside, she once tongue-lashed
a crank caller who got my number from where I worked. He pretended to
be a boss and told me I was fired. She ripped him a new ear hole,
called my local boss and shot at her too. They denied all knowledge of
a firing and assured her that they liked me.
The summer after my freshman year he called me and invited me out to
dinner. I wore the dress that I purchased for the Junior High School
prom. I looked good. We attended the "Jefferson Jackson Day Democratic
Fundraiser" at the Convention Center with hundreds of party people. He
was given these $100.00 a plate tickets for helping the local ward
leader. Metal chairs were hooked together in pairs; we had to pull in
together. Dinner was the standard fare for a banquet?dry, stuffed capon
chicken in tin foil cups, whipped potatoes in tin foil cups, and a
large spoon of overcooked veggie matter. The mini plastic coffee cup
actually had a handle. Our dinner mates were an elderly couple in
polyester; their names were actually Bonnie and Clyde! They had already
started happy hour and provided the entertainment. I hardly heard the
Councilmen speak at the podium for all of the apologizing he did. I was
entirely overdressed. We went dancing later that evening and he stepped
on my feet. How could I resist that much honest effort. The next
morning he taped a rose, pilfered from someone's garden, to my front
door. Dad didn't want to give it to me.
