Reliance on technology and its effect on mankind’s cognitive abilities has been a long contested issue. Technology like every coin has two faces, technological advancements throughout the past have affected our ability to think simultaneously in both positive and negative ways. A clearer understanding of this problem can be obtained by considering certain examples.
As seen on the level of everyday life, improved technology is known to degrade the level of the human thinking ability. The use of simple devices like navigation systems and calculators, while very convenient leads to a drastic decrease in the user’s orientation and arithmetic skills respectively. This phenomenon, in terms of neuroscience can be explained as a result of the synaptic connections being not being used and eventually atrophying.
In contrast to the above, modern technology provides us with opportunities for research and exploration that would have been otherwise possible due to human cognitive limitations. For instance the tool of mathematical modeling leads to a better and more accurate study of changes taking place in different ecosystems; advancements in space exploration technology have led to a better understanding of how the universe works- both of which could not have been accomplished if only human reasoning and speculation had been applied.
Considering both sides of the argument it would be apt to infer that even though, excessive and unthoughtful use of technology may deteriorate memory, reasoning, orientation, and other indispensable cognitive abilities, solutions to many pivotal problems of the modern era can only be obtained with the combination of human intellect and technological progress and thus remove the duality between technology and thinking.
