Real loss

Loss is an absence of what was once there.
So how can one feel loss over something that
Never was?
Is it possible to feel an emptiness,
A void,
Of what might have been,
Of what should have been,
Rather than what was?
Knowing that the loss is one of the future
Makes it inaccessible.
It is an unreality that exists as a ghost,
Tainting what is, with what might have been.
And in this sense, the loss is felt always,
And becomes as real was though it were
Really once there.
