Children's - I see you, little mighty one.
By elsie katz
Red faced on your back
Squalling your needs,
Mouth opening and closing
Like a cross little frog.
Carried reposing on my friend's shoulder
Your velvet clad shape looks baggy
How tiny you are!
And you are growing fast
Your candid blue eyes
Your small solid body
The gingery fuzz on your skull.
Flexing your neck and arms
You grunt effortfully.
Yet your tiny fingers catch and flower the air.
Waking from your cage of slumber
Limbs punch the air.
Wrapped for hazard in your sling
Battling Scotland's arctic blasts.
Together we confront rough,
And savour smooth.
Every day in the Infirmary
Gripped upright from the shoulders
Heads up, legs dangling
Displayed with pride.
There are babies smaller than you
Newer than you,
Raw and kicking.
