Did I not come to you in autumn?
Did I not wait for non-existent buses
As the rain lashed my hair into my eyes?
Did I not catch leaves for you?
Hold fireworks for you?
Tie my hair up for you?
For I will come in winter
When your doorway lies snug with snow
I will wear wellingtons
And bobble hats
Sing carols at your window
For I will come in spring
With the wind turning my cheeks to ice
My fingers to frost
My lips to splinters
And in summer when you fly away
I will grow wings and follow you
Build sandcastles for you
Swim in the sea for you
Sunburn for you
Until I come again in autumn
Waiting for my non-existent buses
