A News Celebrity

A locally famous news celebrity who was once known for his sober and
rigorous reporting took advantage of the dollar-worth of his own face
by launching a mask company specializing in masks of himself and other
local news celebrities. He soon made a large sum of money and decided
to retire from broadcast news in order to spend quality time with his
wife and two sons, as he stated with a smile on his final evening on
Channel 5. Shortly after his retirement his wife and two sons found
themselves representing a very successful national advertising campaign
to encourage people to eat beef. The man quickly realized of course
that he should also take advantage of the currency now swirling around
the faces of his two sons and his wife and that they should have
celebrity masks of their own. This opportunism with their faces was
even more successful than his own. Soon the man encouraged the woman to
stop working and their two boys never had to start. It wasn't long
before other broadcasters realized that they should have profited from
the mask business and sued the man for making money off their faces.
The news celebrity lost every case on every count but retained to the
bitter end the notion that the masks were his novel idea and thus not
subject to the, as he said, petty claims of original face authorship by
other broadcasters. Eventually he had to close down his business. Some
years later his wife demanded a divorce from the news celebrity
because, she said in a short public statement, he had removed himself
from reality.
