You Drive

You drive
Lashed to the passenger seat of your car
by the steady exhaustion of getting on with it
outside the twilight has turned
the world into a cinema foyer
how would these streets these houses
that roll by beyond your focussed driving
be to me if I were newly arrived
my lapsing strength
makes me a stranger everywhere
even in these streets fused together
by the knowing of them for twenty years
I travel the conduits
of my history my meaning
the roofs I never look up to
the turnings off I never turn into
here is where I journeyed variously
heartbroken half-witted broke
drunk tired and stoned
there was a lover there was a thief
my cartography
on a human scale
locates me and is located in me
and you drive and I love you
and the cinema foyer
is warm and quiet
