The Uncaring God

I cannot comprehend a god,
On high celestial plane,
Architect of all Earth's good
But guiltless of its pain.
We thank the Lord for one man saved
When stricken ships go down,
But never seek to offer blame
For the fifty people drowned.
If Mind exists beyond our realm,
It surely doesn't care
What suffering or misery
We mortals have to bear.
Why not obey our programmed minds,
Without compassion's ties
Seek only pleasure, love and fame
That Earthly profit buys?
The goldfish in the garden pond
Trapped beneath his sky
Knows nothing of the eagle's flight,
Nor hears a curlew's cry.
So may it be, beyond our sky
And well beyond our dreams,
A richer way of life exists
For unimagined beings.
But here on Earth our choice is clear '
Do only as we will,
Or seek, within the cosmic laws
A better role to fill.
