We Watched The Sea

We watched the sea together
In silence
Slipped our hands into pockets
Dug toes in the sand

"I was great once,"
She said,
"I shone like a desert star."

I nodded
In silence
Watched the green waves
Break into each other

She sat by my side
And I listened
To our hearts breaking
Under our skin
As we realised
That something had slipped away

Out of our hands

Not understanding
We had given in
And let ourselves go
