It must have been a day

It must have been a day when the gods made love.
The sky delicious yellow,
the air refracted gold.
In the cobalt stream fishes flashed like impossible precious
metals
and in the meadows
leaves exhaled the perfume of intense unnatural greens.
The air, too warm and lazy for insects.
I suckled you.
By the time we had drifted home
night was settled on the Earth
as a lover,
and the Earth stirred
as one who is loved.
The next day
hard refreshing rain, like an argument
and we discussed the future
like sensible people.
