Nighttime

Sometimes I wake up in the night and I wonder where I am.
This thought does not last long, because I sit up and my eyes get used to the dark.
I have a drink – usually water as I read that having juice in the night was bad for your teeth (note to me – check with dentist if this is true)
After my drink I know I am at home and everything is well with the world.
Then I need to decide – should I read or should I try to go back to sleep? When I was a little boy my family did not do much reading. So I use to think that I had to go back to sleep. Now I am grown up I think I know better, so I turn my bedside light on. I look on the floor and scrabble around for a book. There are always books to choose from on the floor. (Another thing from when I was a boy – my folks would get OH! so annoyed if I left food on the floor – you will only encourage the mice, they used to say)
I think I should have a notebook to write down my thoughts about what I am reading. But I actually enjoy just reading. Why should I make notes? Reading can be fun sometimes. Sometimes it is hard work. But why should I make it a drag by writing notes? If I forget what I have read who will know? Not even me, actually.
The other thing I like at night is looking at the red numbers on my clock radio. They are best when they read something like 5.43. Or 12.34. Or 9.54. Why 9.54 I hear you arsk? Becoz 5 add 4 makes 9. Sumtimes one needs to do sums. They help me sleep.
I like waking up in the summer – night time is usually quite bright – brighter than you would expect. And, anyway, how many of us live so far from street lights we cant see at nighttimes?
