Megan’s Secret
“Megan, where are you, it’s time you had your bath”. Mum walked into the living room. Mike was staring into his lap top and PJ was supposed to be doing his homework. “Have either of you seen Megan?” she asked, Mike shrugged his shoulders, never lifting his eyes from his lap top. PJ grinned and nodded to behind the sofa. Mum walked over and Megan was lying on the floor with her hands over her eyes. “Come on out of there, you know that Aunt Jane will be here soon”. Megan crawled out, “I don’t want to have a bath Mummy”. “You must have a bath; you can’t go to the party looking like that”. Megan stamped her foot and shouted “then I’m not going then”. Mum looked very surprised “But you have been looking forward to this party for ages, what’s made you change your mind?” Megan looked across at PJ, who suddenly seemed to be writing furiously in his homework book?
Mum went over and closed his book; PJ sighed and looked up at his mum with a grin. “What have you been saying, Paul?” He knew he was in trouble when mum called him Paul, “nothing, mum”. Before mum could say anything else, Mike suddenly spoke up, “He told Megan that if she had a bath, the water monster would drag her down the plughole”. Mum turned to Megan, “Oh don’t be silly, you know there’s no such thing, it’s just your horrible brother trying to upset you.” Megan ran back behind the sofa, “No it’s true, it’s true and I’m never going to have a bath or a wash again and I’m never going to clean my teeth, so there”. As Mum went to get her, the door bell rang. Megan screamed, “no mummy, it’s the monster, it’s the monster”. Mike looked out the window and said, “Actually its aunt Jane, I’ll let her in” as he left the room, the door bell rang again; Megan screamed even louder, “The bell will wake the monsters up”. Mum pulled Megan from behind the sofa and sat down with her on her lap, as Aunt Jane came in, “Hello what’s happened here”. Mum quickly explained what had happened; Aunt Jane smiled and sat down beside Megan. “I remember when PJ was frightened of having a bath too.” PJ looked furious and Megan stopped crying and looked at Aunt Jane with interest, “really, was it the monsters?” Aunt Jane laughed “No, there aren’t any monsters you know but, come on let’s go up to your room and I’ll tell you a secret.” As she stood up her keys fell to the floor, Megan jumped down and picked them up for her. “Aunt Jane, why do you have bells on your key ring?” Aunt Jane smiled at Megan and bent down and whispered, “That is part of the secret”.
Together they left the room and went up to Megan’s bedroom. They sat down on her bed and Aunt Jane began, “There aren’t really monsters down the plughole you know, but there is something else, no don’t look so worried, there are fairies. “ Megan looked very surprised, but this is the story Aunt Jane told.
We all know that when you pull the plug out of the bath the water disappears down to the drains, but what people don’t realise is that there is a secret place that we cannot see.
It is a beautiful kingdom where the fairies live; it is a wonderful place with a stream of bubbles flowing down the centre, with brightly coloured toadstools either side, where the fairies like to sit and wash their long flowing hair. Behind these are the giant toadstools where the fairies live, these are all the colours of the rainbow with little toadstool shaped chimneys. The Fairy Queen lives in the largest toadstool, its windows glitter like diamonds and on its roof sit snow white doves.
The water for the stream comes from our bathrooms where it flows down to the kingdom below forming glistening waterfalls, the bravest fairies like to ride the bubbles down to the gates of the Kingdom, where the water then flows down sparkling tunnels to another part of the Kingdom where the tooth fairies live.
Some fairies sit at the top of the waterfalls from the houses and listen to the laughter of children playing in their baths, they also hear when the children have lost a tooth and they can then send messages to the tooth fairies, so that they can visit and leave a gift in exchange for the tooth. All fairies have bells on their wings and this is how they send their messages, and the sound travels down the tunnels like sweet music. The tooth fairies always arrive in the night and fly up the waterfalls and through to the bathrooms. Sometimes someone from the house might come into the bathroom, but they never see the fairy, because she uses her fairy dust and all that they see is a spider. That is why you must never hurt a spider if you see one in the bath, just leave it alone and it will make its way home, because it just may be a fairy.
Have you ever wondered what happens to your baby teeth when the tooth fairy has been?” Megan nodded “Well the fairies use them to make their fairy dust, the water we send turns the golden wheels that turn the teeth into fairy dust, so you see it is a magical place and there are certainly no monsters. The only monster in this house is your brother Paul so there is nothing to be frightened of.” Megan looked up and asked “Is this really true?” Aunt Jane smiled, “Of course it’s true”. Megan realised she was still holding Aunt Jane’s keys, “You still haven’t told me why you have got bells on your keys?” Aunt Jane laughed and said, “Just ring them and see”. Megan picked up the keys and gently shook them, as the bells tinkled the room seemed to go all swimmy and gentle laughter sang around her.
“Megan, where are you, it’s time you had your bath” Mum walked into the living room. Mike was staring into his lap top and PJ was supposed to be doing his homework. “Have any of you seen Megan?” she asked, Mike shrugged his shoulders, never lifting his eyes from his lap top. PJ grinned and nodded to behind the sofa. Mum walked over and Megan was lying on the floor fast asleep. Mum gently shook her, “Wake up darling Aunt Jane will be here soon and you need to have a bath before you go to the party.” Megan jumped up, “Oh mummy I had the funniest dream, it was all about fairies and bubbles and things, can I have lots of bubbles in my bath?” Mum looked a little surprised “if you want to.” Megan raced up stairs, Mike looked across at mum “what’s happened to Megan? She hates having a bath, ever since PJ told her about the monsters”. Mum went to follow Megan “I’ve no idea but she can have all the bubbles she wants if it stops her making such a fuss”.
Megan race into the bathroom and leant over the bath, “I’m going to have a bath now” she whispered, “and lots of bubbles, oh and I’ve got a loose tooth”. As mum walked into the bathroom she was sure she heard the tinkle of tiny bells, she shook her head and thought that she must be hearing things, but we know the truth don’t we.
