Late Evening

With the disappearance of late evening
Rises the shine of the pavement
Created by a solitary street lamp
A warm cinnamon glow
Breaking the cold night sky
A movement, a sound, wind through the bare arms of a tree
Magnified by the darkness
The changing of a day
Relentless, always new
The night lifts the filth of the day
And changes the air
Heavy almost palpable, now sharp and free;
The darkness of the street
Is stolen by a cars headlights
The still of the night shattered
By the roaring cough of the engine
Quickly the noise fades
And the eerie silence returns
Disturbed only by the breeze
Carrying a chill
The night is magic, even
Though the streets sleep
I feel strangely alive;
