Asterisks

Deep into the first day of resistance to craving, I earned an asterisk.
I told Lynn about my theory. She smiled and said, "how about a bowl of mint chocolate chip ice cream.
I immediately said, "Oh yeah."
She asked, "what does that do to your theory?"
I explained that having a bowl of ice cream was no problem as her suggestion was a temptation rather than a craving. I hadn't been thinking about having a bowl of ice cream so yeah.
Then she threw in this kicker.
The Christmas cookies have to be eaten before they get stale. This immediately moved the cookies, three frosted Santas and a half dozen chocolate chips, into the obligation rather than temptation/craving area and since they had been made before the "resolution", I felt that it was my duty to attend to them. I didn't want Lynn to think that I didn't appreciate the caring and love that went into their creation.
The Santa cookies went first without a struggle.
The chocolate chips are still present and accounted for, five of them anyways. I gave their existence an asterisk. I'm obligated to finish them in the next couple of days.
No harm, no foul.
The theory lives on.
