S - The scarf had to go
By Jack Cade
- 1118 reads
I stole away beyond the churches and the hive
to move among the naked trees
who stand like masts around the ice-necklaced broads
My black scarf chained me to the breeze
I found a tired and restless woman
lying underneath a rowan
singing, "Black's so boring."
For that reason and that reason only
the scarf had to go
I took her to my favourite winebar for a while
and bought her capriana del colle
She said she'd never tasted such a firm and zesty wine
I never knew such tempests take my soul
but I didn't say - I just kissed her shoulder
and for that privilege I sold her
nights and promises
For that reason and that reason only
I stand in an endless line to a door that's closed anyway
I put my money and my mouth aside
for whenever next she needs to confide
that she's lonely
For that reason and that reason only
I've misplaced my desires
