The Haunting

Sunlight creeps beyond the curtain
Through the crevice between them, a divide
That brings rays pouring in, waking us
It slices into your skin, as half-awake
I observe your first movements of the day,
Your beauty haunting me, I dare not sleep.
Every contour traversed, my eyes slide over you
Like it’s all forbidden and wrong, perfection,
As sparrows start arguing about something
Significant to them, all that’s significant to me
Is right here, the moment cryogenically frozen,
And I am aware this will be referred to in future.
I take a photo of you, lying there like that,
Not sure why, but it sealed the moment,
And thought of all those who must be
Sadder than me, laid as Romeo in this crypt,
A doomed relationship, happiness never survives
And who am I to criticise when I've experienced it?
So, as your blonde hair surges across the pillow
Like the aftermath of a small explosion,
Your eyes flicker open, not quite dead yet,
Blue irises set as whirlpools, as I swirl down
Into your addictive kiss, once more aware
Of the danger you pose, rose thorn in water.
And now I recall the moment, ten years on,
Drowning once more in those smiling eyes
Locked on me, smiling me toward an early death,
Your arms clamping me down, gently begging
For pleasure, and I sigh at the emptiness,
The pillow destined for Romeo’s head,
Who escaped unscathed, but with his Juliet
Haunting him
Until
The end.
