Days by the Sea
Years gone by, times they were hard,
We had an outside toilet
And kept the tin bath in the Yard.
Along came the children, 1, 2, 3, and 4,
A couple of years passed and then there were more.
We didn't have a car, or go fancy places,
Often the children's shoes didn't even have laces.
Money was scarce; we worked hard for every penny,
On many occasions we didn't have any!
We scrimped and we saved, we tried our best,
Then one week a year we took a well-earned rest.
We packed up our cases; we hopped on the train,
We were off to the seaside, be it sunshine or rain!
You ask was it worth it when things were so tight,
To spend all that money, it hardly seems right!
But when I saw those small faces, as they played by the sea
With their buckets and spades and so full of glee,
All the hardship and saving of every last cent,
Was money hard earned, but money well spent.
