What I want to say:

A star is missing from the sky
this dark will last forever
that if morning comes the flowers
won't open up, but only bow their heads
that life, and everything, will carry on
but nothing is the same
But since you've heard it all before
don't say these things.
Say only that
a single leaf has curled, let go and drifted from a tree
beneath the sea a creature softly crumbled, become sand
a moth has folded up its ragged wings
no more than that
(And that I turned, two thirds in sleep
and reached an arm to feel his human warmth
and met a slab of sheet as smooth
and cold as marble stone
and slept no more, and prayed, and prayed,
and prayed).
