Mine is a covered wagon
on the old Oregon trail
headed for California
where the peaches grow
and the grapes on the vine
are purple-soft as twilight
Mine is a train
bound for Siberia
screaming like a scalded devil
thru the night
beneath the Ural Mountains
dragon-black, a mane of sparks
and a red-coal heart
darkly comprehended by wolves
who watch
from icy forests of pine
Mine is a brigantine
on the bright blue wave
of two hundred years ago
we outran the coastguard
carrying rum and gunpowder
and gold coins from Old Mexico
we laughed at Death as he tipped his sombrero
and told him we'd see him anon
but we shed a tear
when we passed by Cuba
and thought of the girls
of sweet Havana
Mine is an oxcart
it bore a wife and two children
three days of thirst
on the great plains of Jordan
headed for Damascus
with its silk bazaars
watch-fires of evening
and cool green gardens
Mine is a song
it bore me away
from the fortress of the world
to a long dark river
in the dead of night
face to face
with the Jaguar Spirit
Mine is a poem
from fervent lips
locked in the loins
of the Mother of The World
cut down in battle
then reborn
to walk the bright boulevard
of the true heart
