Apocalyptic
Jennifer Pickup, 30.06.2026
Heat wave on heat wave
Portents everywhere
Hailstones like golf balls
Unforgiving air
A string of dead dogs
For ignorance kills
Broken car windows
Emergency skills
Darkness descending
Brings flash-flooding rains
Lightning-filled sky-scapes
Overflowing drains
Abandoned cars sit
With windows smashed in
Police tape flutters
The standards of sin
Our misaligned stars
Can’t show us the way
We’re lost on this path
We’ve been led astray
Stop waging the wars
And re-ground the planes
You’re killing us all
For monetary gains
Omens keep coming
Black cat for bad luck
Temperatures rising
The world’s come unstuck
The strawberry moon
Hangs low in the sky
It brings back the rain
I watch people cry
You’ve broken my heart
With sheer arrogance
We can’t reconcile
Must drop this pretence
The choices we make
Hurt them more than us
I’m holding my tongue
My heart feels disgust
Each ring of the phone
May signal an end
Come in for a cure
But losing a friend
Put down a magpie
Just one for sorrow
What will angered gods
Bring us tomorrow?
