God as a Carp

The voice of God came from the fish -
a carp in New Square about to be beaten,
shouted out to the man standing over it, ready to kill.
It was the guttural devil to the Christian
but the Hasid heard only beautiful Hebrew.
Both men told the other to pray
so that they might learn fully from the fish
whose demise was only postponed for a moment.
After being clubbed it was cut in the Kosher fashion
as no doubt the Hasid believed would be His wish
when He left this carp's body behind
before His latest, glorious ascension.
