First Aid Kit

Shaking in the darkness
Or a sharp edged gasp
I watch you
Endure it
A secret lonely task.

I try to make a bed for you
To protect you from the pain
To softly soothe your aching
Like umbrellas shield the rain.

But sadly, I realise
This problem solving bed,
Is intrinsically problematic
As it’s only my head.

If only I could be your first aid kit!
I’d be plasters for the cuts
I’d cool the searing limbs
And with hugs I’d wrap you up!

But sadly, again,
It’s only in my head-
Just about as useful
As my problem solving bed.

All I can do is watch you
As you daily play the games,
I watch you,
And ache with you
Your body caught in flames.

I wish that I could somehow
Make it all worthwhile
So you wouldn’t walk each day
In agony,
Hidden by a smile.
