Our last summer

When we were young
We had no cares
The grass was always green
The sun was hot on our bare legs
We always were a team.
Days were lifetimes
We always managed to fill
Never a minute to spare
Always in a terrible rush
Doing things here and there
Then one day when you couldnt
keep up
I teased you nearly all day
You went home and went to bed
You said tomorrow we would play
On a warm summer morning
I called at your house
And knew straightaway something
was wrong
My parents were called and I was
Taken away
And gently told you were gone
"Gone where?"
I remember asking outloud
My mother then burst into tears
And I realised the worst of my fears
Days dragged on and were
No longer fun
And we were no longer a team
I cried and I sulked
And I wished everyday
Things were back to the way they
Had been
Each summer I missed you
And the things that we did
But the pain eased year after year
And now I'm so glad I called you my friend
But I still really wish you were here
