Cross Talk
'It just ain't the same with your dad there all day Sal' grumbled Mrs
Henshawe, dumping her bag of shopping on the table' I mean I'm used to
having the place to myself, but now he's at home, I seem to be forever
stopping to make cups of tea. Other men when they retire, work in the
garden, or find a hobby that takes them out of the house, but would
your father do anything sensible like that? . Oh no! All he wants to do
is to sit in front of the box or follow me about from room to
room.'
'I expect he misses work'. Sally handed her mother a cup of tea.
'Work! I don't think he ever did any work. He seems to have slipped
into this retirement lark as though he's been sitting about doing
nothing for years. Well I tell you. I've had enough.'
'You're not going to leave him are you mum?' Sally turned a stricken
face towards her mother
Aggie Henshawe laughed. 'Gawd bless yer no1. I'm going to get myself a
job'.
'What sort of job? Let's face it mum you're hardly in the first flush
of youth'
'I'm not after anything grand. Just a bit of cleaning. Maudie Baggs her
who lives over the road has got herself on one to one of them agencies,
They're always on the lookout for experienced people.'
'You're certainly that, and if it's what you want, I hope you get
it.'
'Thanks love. At least it'll get me out of the house. I'll give them a
ring when I get home'
'Now let me see, what was the name of that Agency? Maudie said it was
in yellow pages
Adam.... No Acme. That's it. Acme Modern Cleaning Agency. I do wish
they'd print these numbers a bit bigger. Ah it's ringing.'
'Good morning. Acme Model?'
'Hallo hallo is that Acme's?
'Yes. Can I help you?'
'I hope so. I'd like my name to go on your books.'
'I see. Have you had experience of this sort of work?
'Gawd bless yer soul. I've had years of it.'
'I see. Years! Well the manageress is out right now. Perhaps if could
call back later.'
'I haven't got time. Can't you at least take my name?'
'Oh well. All right. Your name is?'
'Enshawe. Aggie Enshawe.'
'Aggie Enshawe? I don't seem to have heard?'
'Not Enshawe. Henshawe, with a haitch'
Well Miss Henshawe I?'
'Don't be cheeky. It's Mrs. At least after three girls. I hope it
is.'
'Oh I see. You're ringing on behalf of your daughters?'
'Of course I ain't. Luckily they've all got jobs. Anyway, they wouldn't
want to do this sort of thing. Now can we please get on. This call's
costing me money.
'Oh very well Mrs. Henshawe. Of course we'd expect you to call in
before we can reach a decision'.
'All right I don't mind coming in, but can you give me some idea of
what I would be expected to do?'
'Oh just the usual although, as. I have told you the manageress isn't
here right at this moment.'
'Well can't you take some details? It will save time when she does come
back'.
'Oh very well. Firstly how about photographs?'
(Photographs? I wonder what they want photographs for? Perhaps I shall
need it as identification if I have to go into some of them posh
offices.)
'Mrs. Henshawe. Are you still there?'
'Yes yes. I'm still here I'm just thinking about the photos'.
'Of course we would want to see them before we could do anything.
Perhaps you have a portfolio?'
'No'. (What the hell is a portfolio? The only photo I've got is the one
on my bus pass.
. I suppose I could show them one I had taken at Edie's wedding when
I'd just had a new perm)
'Well Angela. - She's the boss by the way. Will of course want to see
any pictures you have. Now what about clothes. You do take them off
while you're working I suppose?'
'Of course I do, but I like to keep my hat on. I find I work much
better with my hat on.'
(Oh God wait till Angela hears about this) 'I see. Now how about
props?'
(Props. Good Lord, surely they can provide a prop. How can I be
expected to get on the bus carrying a blinking great prop)? I'm not
sure what you mean miss.'
'Props. The things that you work with.'
'Oh. Well why didn't you say so? Well I always use a bucket I like a
nice big one mind you then of course there's the scrubbing brush. and
it's got to have really hard bristles'
(The mind boggles. Oh I do wish Angela were here. I'm not trained for
this)'. I see, a bucket, and a hard scrubbing brush. Is there anything
else?'
'Well I'm very happy to have a nice long handled stiff broom. Really
stiff mind you. You can't do anything with the soft ones '
'So that's a bucket, a scrubbing brush with hard bristles, and a long
handled stiff broom.
. May I ask what you do with them? I'm sure Angela will be
fascinated'.
'You do ask some daft questions. What the hell do you think I do with
them? I stick the broom up me behind, and stroke me fanny with the
scrubbing brush'.
'(That'll make some of Angela's old codgers eyes come out like organ
stops)
(I don't know. Girls of today! Put a scrubbing brush in their hands and
they'd probably think it was a flipping hedgehog) 'Right miss. Is there
anything else you want to know, because I've got to go soon.'
'Just one more thing. Pose. Some of our gentlemen??'
'Poes? Did you say Poes? Oh no I ain't never emptied chamber pots, and
I'm certainly not going to start now. Thank you for your time. Good
