Westgate by the sea
watching the waves
and an old man with his son
sat next to me

Ragged and worn
although tall and once handsome
get out much I said
no said his son
yes said the old man
every day when I can

But behind him his son said no
and smiled
as if he were an imbecile
already dead

As the old man finished
his fag on a bench
on the pier
at Westgate on Sea
